A custom perfume box is a rigid or paper-based package developed around a specific perfume bottle, its insert, structure and finish. At Esion Package, we develop the packaging around the actual product rather than treating the box as a separate graphic-design exercise.

For perfume brands, problems usually appear when the bottle does not fit the insert correctly, the structure does not match the intended presentation, or the finished sample differs from the approved specification.

This guide focuses on the perfume box, insert, structure, quotation and sampling process. It does not cover the perfume bottle, cap or fragrance formulation.

The practical project route is:

Bottle specifications → Structure → RFQ → Preliminary quotation → Insert development → Physical sample → Final specification approval → Mass production

Following this sequence gives buyers a clearer basis for comparing suppliers and approving the packaging before production.

For brands comparing premium rigid packaging options, our Custom Rigid Gift Boxes range provides a broader reference for rigid construction and customization.

What Bottle Information Should You Prepare First?

The bottle specification should be the starting point for the packaging project. A perfume volume such as 50 ml is not enough to determine the box because bottles with the same capacity can have very different dimensions, shapes and weights.

Which bottle details affect the box?

Bottle information Packaging impact
Length × width × height Determines internal space
Bottle weight Determines support requirements
Shoulder shape Affects insert contact points
Cap dimensions Determines upper clearance
Cap weight Can affect the center of gravity
Bottle orientation Determines how the insert supports it
Number of bottles Determines internal layout
Physical sample or approved drawing Improves development accuracy

The bottle shoulder and cap deserve particular attention. A heavier cap can move the center of gravity upward, while a wide shoulder may require additional clearance around the upper part of the bottle.

If possible, provide the actual production bottle or an approved dimensional drawing before the structure is finalized. The packaging should ultimately be approved against the bottle version that will be packed.

A practical RFQ therefore starts with bottle dimensions, weight, product photos from several angles, quantity and preferred packaging direction.

Which Custom Perfume Box Structure Fits the Product?

The structure should be selected before the final quotation because the opening method, internal space, assembly and presentation all affect the manufacturing specification.

Bottle or project situation Suitable structure Main consideration
Standard square or rectangular bottle Magnetic Gift Box Premium opening and controlled presentation
Product requiring sliding access Drawer Box Pull-out presentation and guided access
Product requiring a connected lid Hinged Gift Box Connected lid, base and hinge movement
Simple premium presentation Two-Piece Rigid Setup Box Separate lid and base
Flat shipping is important Collapsible Rigid Box Rigid presentation with reduced shipping volume
Multiple perfume bottles Any suitable structure + multi-compartment insert Individual bottle positioning

A standard square perfume bottle may work well with a magnetic structure when the brand wants a controlled opening experience. A sliding format can make sense when the presentation is built around pulling the product forward, while a hinged structure keeps the lid connected to the base.

For a simpler two-piece construction, a two-piece rigid setup box separates the lid and base. A collapsible rigid box can be considered when rigid presentation needs to be combined with a more efficient shipping format.

For opening movement and internal support on drawer and hinged structures, see our Drawer Box Packaging guide and Hinged Gift Box guide once their final URLs are confirmed.

For a multi-bottle perfume set, “multi-compartment” describes the internal layout, not a separate outer-box structure. The outer box can still use a magnetic, drawer, hinged or other rigid construction.

How Should You Prepare the RFQ and Preliminary Quotation?

The RFQ should contain enough technical information for suppliers to quote against the same basic specification. The final commercial specification can then be locked after physical sampling.

If you are already comparing rigid packaging suppliers, start with our Custom Rigid Gift Boxes range and then define the perfume-specific structure, insert and finishing requirements below.

What should the RFQ contain?

Category Information
Product Bottle dimensions, weight and photos
Quantity Target order quantity
Structure Magnetic, drawer, hinged, setup or collapsible
Insert Required bottle positioning
Box Target dimensions or reference box
Artwork Ready or in development
Finishing Foil, embossing, lamination, coating, etc.
Packing Individual or bulk packing
Market US, EU or other target market
Schedule Required sample and production timing

How should you compare quotations?

Compare suppliers against the same specification.

Comparison point What to confirm
Structure Same construction and opening method
Material Same board and wrapping specification
Insert Included and developed for the bottle
Finishing All requested finishes included
Sampling Sample cost and timing
MOQ Quantity requirement
Production When the production clock starts
QC Inspection before shipment
Packing Finished-box packing method

Illustrative example — not a specific customer project: A brand developing 3,000 boxes for a 50 ml perfume bottle could submit the bottle dimensions and weight, product photos from several angles, preferred magnetic structure, insert requirement, artwork status and target delivery date.

The preliminary quotation should not be treated as the final production specification. Once the physical sample is approved, dimensions, insert fit, materials and finishing can be locked before mass production.

How Should the Insert Fit the Perfume Bottle?

The insert needs to control movement while keeping the bottle presentation clean. For perfume packaging, the critical points are the bottle body, shoulder, cap and removal direction.

What should the insert control?

The insert should prevent unnecessary:

  • lateral movement;
  • rotation;
  • vertical movement;
  • contact between the bottle and rigid box walls;
  • interference around the cap.

A heavy cap can shift the center of gravity upward, so support should be considered around the actual bottle geometry rather than simply making the lower opening tighter.

The bottle should also remain practical to remove. An insert that holds the bottle securely but requires excessive force can create a poor customer experience.

If your bottle needs a custom insert, send us the bottle or approved dimensions and we can confirm the support approach during sampling.

What Perfume-Specific Material and Finish Checks Matter?

Perfume packaging has several details that deserve physical inspection because appearance is only part of the final opening experience.

Should odor be checked during sampling?

Yes. Paper, printing materials and adhesives can have residual odors, and perfume is a product category where smell is particularly noticeable during opening.

The practical check is to evaluate the finished sample physically rather than approving the packaging entirely from photographs.

If a project has a specific low-odor material or adhesive requirement, discuss it with the supplier before sampling.

Which finishes deserve closer inspection?

Dark printed surfaces and high-visibility finishes can make scratches, scuffing, edge marks and registration differences easier to notice.

During sampling, inspect:

  • large solid-color areas;
  • wrapped edges;
  • corners;
  • foil registration;
  • logo position;
  • embossing;
  • visible adhesive areas.

The goal is consistent reproduction of the approved sample rather than adding as many finishing processes as possible.

Should regulatory information be considered before artwork?

Yes. For EU cosmetics, Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 includes requirements concerning information provided on cosmetic product containers and packaging, including provisions under Article 19. The artwork should therefore leave appropriate space for required information before the visual design is finalized.

For other markets, including the United States, verify the applicable local labeling requirements for the finished perfume product before artwork approval.

For broader packaging material and finishing considerations, buyers can also review the relevant packaging guides on Esion Package before finalizing the perfume box specification.

What Should You Check During Physical Sampling?

The physical sample should prove that the approved design works with the actual product.

Which points should be checked?

Inspect:

  • box dimensions;
  • bottle fit;
  • insert position;
  • cap clearance;
  • opening movement;
  • closure;
  • printing;
  • finishing;
  • surface condition;
  • odor;
  • overall presentation.

For standard structures, we generally plan physical sampling at around 3 working days after sample fee and material/design confirmation. Complex structures, custom inserts or projects requiring additional development should be confirmed individually rather than treated as a universal three-day promise.

The sample stage is separate from mass production.

What if the bottle does not fit the sample?

Do not force the bottle into the box.

First determine whether the problem comes from:

  • bottle dimensions;
  • insert opening;
  • support depth;
  • cap clearance;
  • internal box dimensions;
  • bottle orientation.

Then revise the affected specification and confirm the revised sample before production.

What Transport and Market Requirements Should Be Checked?

Perfume shipments may involve dangerous-goods requirements depending on the product, destination and transport method. The custom perfume box is only one part of the overall shipping system.

IATA publishes a new Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR) edition each year; the 68th edition takes effect January 1, 2027. Always use the edition in force on the shipping date. See the official IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations for the applicable requirements.

For sea transport, the IMDG Code 2024 Edition incorporating Amendment 42-24 became mandatory on January 1, 2026. Buyers should check the applicable requirements for the actual shipment through the official IMO IMDG Code information.

For EU-bound packaging, Regulation (EU) 2025/40, the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), applies from August 12, 2026. Buyers can ask suppliers what material and packaging information is available for the final construction and then confirm any market-specific requirements with their compliance or logistics team through the official EUR-Lex PPWR text.

Update reminder: Review the IATA DGR and IMDG wording again in January 2027 before publishing or materially updating this page.

What Should Be Confirmed Before Mass Production?

Final approval should consolidate the information that production and QC will use as the common reference.

Final production checklist

Product

  • □ Final bottle version confirmed
  • □ Bottle dimensions and weight confirmed
  • □ Number of bottles confirmed

Packaging

  • □ Structure approved
  • □ Final box dimensions approved
  • □ Insert fit tested
  • □ Material approved
  • □ Artwork approved
  • □ Printing approved
  • □ Finishing approved
  • □ Assembly method confirmed
  • □ Packing method confirmed

Once these points are aligned, the approved sample becomes the physical reference for production and QC.

How Can a Custom Perfume Box Manufacturer Simplify the Project?

The main advantage of working with one packaging manufacturer is coordination. When structure, printing, finishing, assembly and QC are handled through connected production stages, there are fewer separate specifications to reconcile.

At Dongguan Esion Packaging Co., Ltd., we are a one-stop paper packaging manufacturer. Our production process includes paper cutting, printing, gluing, laminating, die cutting, handmade assembly, QC inspection and packing.

We hold FSC certification. FSC-certified materials can be requested for eligible projects; FSC status should be confirmed for the specific material and order.

For buyers who want to compare rigid constructions before requesting a perfume packaging quotation, our Custom Rigid Gift Boxes page provides a direct product reference.

FAQ

Can I order a custom perfume box without a separate insert?

Yes, depending on the bottle and structure. Some designs can provide adequate support through the box itself, while shaped or heavier glass bottles may require a dedicated insert.

Should I send the actual perfume bottle for sampling?

If possible, yes. An actual bottle allows the packaging team to check its shape, weight, shoulder, cap clearance and fit more accurately than dimensions alone.

How should I package a perfume discovery set?

A discovery set normally needs a multi-compartment internal layout so each bottle has a defined position. The outer box can use different structures depending on the required presentation.

Does perfume packaging need to consider transport regulations?

Yes. Depending on the fragrance, destination and shipping method, dangerous-goods requirements may apply. Check the applicable IATA or IMDG requirements for the actual shipment with the responsible logistics or compliance team.

What are Esion Package’s MOQ and production times?

As of September 2026, our general MOQ is 1,000 pieces. Standard physical sampling is approximately 3 working days, while mass production is typically around 15 days after final sample/specification approval. Complex structures or custom inserts are confirmed per project.
