A 2 bottle wine box is sized from the two actual bottles: the internal length follows the taller bottle, the internal width is both bottle diameters plus the divider and clearance, and the structure has to carry roughly 2.3–3.0 kg of wine and glass when two standard 750ml bottles are packed.
This guide covers paper-based gift boxes for two bottles, also searched as a two bottle wine box or 2 bottle wine gift box. It focuses on what changes when a second bottle is added: layout, size calculation, total weight and the divider between the bottles.
For single-bottle specifications, closure clearance, base and shoulder support, transport and Q4 timing, see our Wine Gift Box Guide. This article does not cover wooden crates or corrugated shipping cartons.
At Esion Package, we develop wine packaging from the actual bottle first. For two-bottle projects, the sequence is:
Bottle pair → Layout → Internal size → Divider → Structure → Sample
How Should Two Wine Bottles Be Arranged in One Box?
Choose between lying flat and standing upright according to how the box will be opened, displayed and carried, because both layouts use almost the same internal envelope.
In a lying-flat layout, the bottles sit side by side along the length of the box and the lid opens over the long face. In an upright layout, the bottles stand next to each other, the box is tall and narrow, and the bottles lift out vertically.
| Layout | How the load is carried | Opening | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lying flat, side by side | Body and neck supports in the insert carry both bottles | Wide lid over the long face | Closure ends need a defined support point rather than relying on the lid |
| Standing upright, side by side | Each bottle stands on its own base | Narrow lid on top, bottles lift out vertically | Lid clearance above both closures and a stable base for a tall, narrow box |
| Lying flat, head-to-tail | Same as lying flat, with the bottles reversed | Wide lid over the long face | May reduce width but changes the presentation; confirm with a physical sample |
The orientation principles for a single bottle are explained in our Wine Gift Box Guide. With two bottles, the new question is how the load is shared across the insert and the divider.

How Do You Calculate the Internal Size of a 2 Bottle Wine Box?
Calculate each internal dimension from the real bottle dimensions plus clearance, and never from the bottle volume or by doubling one bottle.
For a lying-flat layout:
- Internal length = height of the taller bottle with its closure + end clearance
- Internal width = clearance + bottle 1 diameter + divider space + bottle 2 diameter + clearance
- Internal depth = larger bottle diameter + top and bottom clearance
For an upright layout, the same envelope stands on end: the length becomes the internal height, and the width and depth form the footprint.
The table below applies these formulas to bottle data from the Ardagh Glass North American range, the same source used in our Wine Gift Box Guide. It is an illustration with assumed allowances of 5 mm clearance on each outer side and 6 mm between the two bottles for the divider and gaps. These allowances are demonstration values, not Esion standard specifications.
| Bottle pair | Bottle heights | Illustrative internal length × width × depth | Filled weight of two bottles |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 × Bordeaux Claret Allure (76mm diameter) | 312mm | 322 × 168 × 86mm | about 2.74kg |
| 2 × Burgundy Evolution (79mm diameter) | 291mm | 301 × 174 × 89mm | about 2.30kg |
| Burgundy Evolution + Champagne (79mm and 89mm) | 291mm and 285mm | 301 × 184 × 99mm | about 2.64kg |
| 2 × Champagne (89mm diameter) | 285mm | 295 × 194 × 99mm | about 2.98kg |
These figures use empty-bottle dimensions only. They exclude the closure and capsule height, the insert wall thickness and the board and wrapping thickness, all of which change the final size. The external dimensions are confirmed on the structural drawing once the insert is defined.
When the pair is mixed, the taller bottle sets the length and the wider bottle sets the depth. The height difference between the two bottles can usually be absorbed in the insert, but this should be verified with both production bottles.

How Much Weight Must a 2 Bottle Wine Box Carry?
For two standard 750ml bottles, plan for roughly 2.3–3.0kg of wine and glass before adding the insert and the box itself.
The figures in the table above use the planning method from our Wine Gift Box Guide: about 0.75kg of wine per 750ml bottle plus the empty-bottle weight. They are calculated planning values, not measured package weights, so the actual filled bottles should be weighed.
Two 1.5L Burgundy Magnum bottles would reach about 4.6kg on the same basis (2 × 2.30kg), and that case should be treated as a separate structural evaluation rather than scaled up from a 750ml design.
The extra weight affects each structure differently:
| Structure | Two-bottle consideration | Related guide |
|---|---|---|
| Magnetic closure | The closure keeps the box shut; the insert and base carry both bottles | Magnetic Gift Box Guide |
| Two-piece lift-off | Lid-to-base fit should be checked with both bottles loaded | Two-Piece Rigid Setup Box Guide |
| Hinged | Hinge alignment and lid movement should be verified with the full load | Custom Hinged Gift Box Guide |
| Collapsible | Folding areas and load transfer need the most checking at this weight | Collapsible Rigid Box Guide |
A handle concentrates the load at its attachment points, so a handle should be evaluated against the filled weight of both bottles. Our Magnetic Wine Boxes collection includes designs with handles.
How Should the Divider and Insert Separate Two Bottles?
The divider and insert must keep the two bottles from touching each other and give each bottle its own supported position.
The divider is also part of the width calculation. Its thickness and the gaps on either side are included in the 6mm allowance used in the example above, so a thicker divider widens the box.
- Glass-to-glass contact: the divider and bottle positions should keep the bottles apart when the box is handled.
- Independent removal: each bottle should lift out without disturbing the other one.
- Divider stability: the divider should stay in position when one bottle has been removed.
- Shared load: the box walls should not be relied on to hold the bottles; the insert and base should carry the load.
The insert can be a single piece with two cavities or a base with a separate divider. The material (paperboard, EVA or another option) is selected for fit, appearance and load, and the geometry principles for the closure, base and shoulder are covered in the Wine Gift Box Guide.

What Should You Check When Sampling a 2 Bottle Wine Box?
Use the production bottles and add three two-bottle checks to the standard fit check.
Start with the sampling checklist in our Wine Gift Box Guide, then confirm:
- The two bottles do not touch each other when the box is handled gently.
- One bottle can be removed and replaced without moving the other.
- The closed lid does not press on either closure.
For the full sampling sequence from design to approval, see our Custom Packaging Sample Process Guide.
When Is a 2 Bottle Wine Box Not the Right Choice?
A paper gift box presents two bottles; it is not transport packaging for them.
If the bottles will be shipped individually to consumers, the gift box should be treated as the presentation layer and the outer carton and transport protection evaluated separately, as described in the transport section of our Wine Gift Box Guide. Wooden crates and corrugated bottle shippers are different product categories with different load and protection requirements.
What Should You Send to Quote a 2 Bottle Wine Box?
Send the details below in addition to the standard bottle information listed in the Wine Gift Box Guide.
- Model or supplier reference for both bottles, and whether they are the same bottle
- Filled weight of each bottle
- Preferred layout: lying flat, upright or open to a recommendation
- Handle required or not
- Divider and insert preference
- Quantity and target delivery date
Our current wine-box reference as of October 2026 is MOQ 1,000 pieces, sample time 5–7 days and mass production time 15 working days. These figures should be reconfirmed when the final layout, insert, quantity and artwork are quoted. Q4 timing is covered in the Wine Gift Box Guide.

FAQ
What is the internal size of a 2 bottle wine box for two 750ml bottles?
It depends on the bottle pair. The illustrative calculations above give roughly 295–322mm in length, 168–194mm in width and 86–99mm in depth, before the closure, insert thickness and board are added. Confirm the final size with the actual bottles.
How much does a 2 bottle wine box weigh when full?
Two standard 750ml bottles weigh about 2.3–3.0kg for the wine and glass alone in our planning examples. The insert and the box add to that, so the filled package should be weighed during sampling.
Can a 2 bottle wine box hold two different bottles?
Yes, if the insert is developed around both bottles. The taller bottle sets the box length, the wider bottle sets the depth, and each bottle needs its own supported position.
Should the two bottles lie flat or stand upright?
Both layouts use almost the same internal envelope. The choice depends on the opening you want, how the box is displayed and carried, and how the insert supports the load.
Can a 2 bottle wine box have a handle?
It can, but the handle attachment must be evaluated against the filled weight of both bottles. Send the bottle weights and the handle requirement with your quote request.
