Clothing Gift Box Guide: Size, Structure & Sample Checks
9. 10 月, 2026By Esion Package Editorial Team Technical review: Esion Packaging Engineering Team Last updated: October 9, 2026
A clothing gift box is a rigid or paperboard box made to hold folded garments, such as shirts, knitwear, scarves, sleepwear or a multi-item set, and present them as a gift. It works only when it is sized from the garment as it will actually be folded and packed, and then tested with that garment before bulk production.
This guide covers sizing, structure choice and the sample checks that matter most for apparel. Corrugated shipping boxes are a different product; for those, see our custom clothing boxes. For the general workflow from sample to mass production, see our step-by-step process guide.
At Esion Package, we make rigid and magnetic gift boxes for apparel brands alongside corrugated clothing boxes and paper bags. What follows is how we approach garment boxes at the sampling stage.
What Size Clothing Gift Box Do You Need?
Size the box from the folded garment, not from a size label. Fold the garment the way it will be packed, let it settle, then measure its length, width and height. The internal size is the folded size plus the allowances the garment needs to go in and come out easily, plus the thickness of anything packed with it:
- Internal length and width = folded garment size + handling allowance
- Internal depth = folded height + tissue or card thickness + lid clearance
Wall and wrapping thickness are added on top, so the outer dimensions are always larger than the internal size. When you ask for a quote, state clearly whether each dimension is internal or external. A box that is too large is also a problem: the garment shifts, and the presentation looks less considered.
Here is a worked example for a folded T-shirt:
| Item | Length | Width | Depth |
|---|---|---|---|
| Folded T-shirt (measured) | 30 cm | 24 cm | 3 cm |
| Handling allowance (example: 5 mm per side) | +1 cm | +1 cm | n/a |
| Tissue and lid clearance (example) | n/a | n/a | +1 cm |
| Internal size to request | 31 cm | 25 cm | 4 cm |
The allowances above are examples only. The right figures depend on the fabric, how firmly the garment springs back, and the box structure, and they are confirmed on the sample.
How Garment Type Changes the Size
| Garment | What changes the size | Check at sampling | Structures to consider |
|---|---|---|---|
| T-shirt, shirt, blouse | Fold style; collar and sleeve position | Whether a shirt board or card changes the depth | Two-piece rigid, magnetic |
| Sweater, hoodie, knitwear | Thickness and spring-back; depth is the main variable | Closing the lid without pressing on the garment | Two-piece rigid, hinged |
| Dress, skirt, suit | Layered folds and a larger flat footprint | Crease lines after the packed box has rested | Hinged, two-piece rigid, magnetic |
| Scarf, hat, belt, gloves | Small or shaped items; hats need height | Whether the item can shift inside the space | Drawer, magnetic |
| Sleepwear, swimwear, underwear | Light fabric with a thin fold | Whether the garment slides to one end when the box is tilted | Magnetic, drawer |
| Multi-item sets, subscription boxes | Combined size of every item plus cards or tissue | The complete packed arrangement, not a single piece | Magnetic, hinged |
Which Box Structure Suits a Clothing Gift Box?
Rigid clothing gift boxes are usually built from a small set of structures. The right one depends on how the garment is packed and how the customer should open the box. Each structure has its own guide on our site; this table is for choosing between them.
| Structure | Suits | Watch for in sampling | Guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Two-piece rigid setup box (separate lid and base) | Flat folded shirts, knitwear, sets | Lid fit: too tight and it grips the garment when lifted, too loose and it slides | Two-piece rigid setup box guide |
| Magnetic gift box | Premium launches, gift sets, subscription boxes | Magnet strength and alignment; check that magnet areas and edges cannot snag fabric | Magnetic gift box guide |
| Hinged gift box | Retail and gifting where the lid should stay attached | Hinge movement and the lid angle when opened | Hinged gift box guide |
| Drawer box | Scarves, belts and other accessories; layered reveals | Pull resistance, and whether the garment catches on the sleeve edge | Drawer box guide |
| Collapsible rigid box | Brands that need to store or ship boxes flat | Assembly by the packer; heavy knitwear may need a firmer structure | Collapsible rigid box guide |
When a Rigid Gift Box Is Not the Right Choice
- Direct-to-consumer shipping. A gift box does not replace an outer carton or mailer. Plan the shipping packaging separately, and treat the gift box as presentation packaging inside it.
- Short promotional runs where unit cost matters more than presentation. A simpler folding carton may suit the order better.
- Boxes that must be stored in large numbers with little warehouse space. Rigid boxes that arrive assembled take more room, so compare a collapsible structure.
What to Customize on a Garment Box
- Interior colour and print. Choose with the garment in mind. A dark interior or heavy ink coverage against a pale fabric is worth a rub test on the sample.
- Tissue paper. Tissue protects the garment surface and softens the opening. We supply custom tissue paper to match the box.
- Logo and finishes. Foil stamping, embossing and soft-touch lamination all work on garment boxes. Keep the logo away from fold lines, hinges and lid edges. Finish options are described in more detail in our drawer box customization guide.
- Carrying. If customers collect purchases in store, pair the box with matching clothing paper bags.
What to Check on a Clothing Gift Box Sample
Ask for the sample to be made and packed with the real garment, not shown empty. An empty sample can look right and still fail once the garment, tissue and card are inside.
- Fit and closing. The garment goes in and comes out without dragging, and the lid closes without pressing on the fold.
- Rest test. If time allows, leave the packed sample closed for a few days, then check for crease lines or a bowing lid.
- Snag check. Run a hand along interior edges, magnet areas and insert edges, particularly if the garment is knitwear.
- Rub and transfer. Rub a printed or dark surface against an offcut of the lightest fabric you plan to pack.
- Odour. Garments can pick up odours in a closed box, so smell the sample after it has been closed for a while.
- Brand elements. Check logo position against the lid edge and hinge, the wrapped corners and edges, and the position of tissue and cards once packed.
- Opening experience. Open it with one hand and look at how the garment is presented at the first moment.
- Outer carton. If the box will ship inside a carton, test the fit with that carton.
Keep the approved sample, its photos and its measurements as the reference for bulk production.
Production Reference and Q4 Timeline (as of October 2026)
| Item | Reference |
|---|---|
| General MOQ | 1,000 pcs per design. Smaller quantities are occasionally possible, but unit cost is usually much higher |
| Sample lead time | About 3 working days after the sample fee is received and materials and artwork are confirmed; express delivery usually takes 3–5 days |
| Mass production | Usually 8–15 days after sample approval; rush orders may be available |
| Shipping | Express 3–7 days for small orders; air about 5–7 days; sea about 25–35 days |
These are general reference ranges and are confirmed for each project, structure and finish.
For holiday launches, add the ranges together. Sample making, courier and mass production plus sea freight come to roughly 6–8½ weeks, and the same steps with air freight come to roughly 3–4½ weeks. Neither figure includes your artwork approval, sample review time, customs clearance or local delivery. Counting from October 9, sea freight for a Christmas launch leaves little margin. Chinese New Year 2027 falls on February 6, so confirm factory scheduling early for spring collections.
Shipping Clothing Gift Boxes to the EU
If your boxes will be placed on the EU market, check the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, Regulation (EU) 2025/40, which generally applies from August 12, 2026. Its requirements apply to different packaging types with different dates, so confirm which provisions cover your gift box and your outer packaging. This guide is not legal advice.
What to Send for a Clothing Gift Box Quote
- The garment type and its folded dimensions, or a sample garment
- The number of items per box, and anything packed with them (tissue, card, accessory)
- Preferred structure, or a reference photo of a box you like
- Estimated quantity per design
- Artwork as PDF, AI or CDR, or your logo if you need design support
- Finishes you want to use
- Destination, shipping method and the date you need the boxes

Frequently Asked Questions About Clothing Gift Boxes
What size should a clothing gift box be?
Measure the garment after folding it the way it will be packed. The internal length and width are the folded size plus a handling allowance, and the internal depth is the folded height plus tissue or card thickness and lid clearance. Confirm the final allowances on a sample packed with the real garment.
Which box structure is best for clothing?
It depends on the garment and how the box is opened. Flat shirts suit a two-piece rigid or magnetic box. Thick knitwear needs depth first, so a two-piece or hinged box is often easier to size. Scarves, belts and similar accessories suit a drawer or magnetic box. Brands that need to store boxes flat can compare a collapsible rigid box.
Can a clothing gift box be used for shipping?
Not on its own. A rigid gift box is designed for presentation, so plan an outer carton or corrugated mailer for shipping, and test the gift box inside it.
What is the MOQ for custom clothing gift boxes?
Our general MOQ is 1,000 pcs per design as of October 2026. Smaller quantities are occasionally possible, but the unit cost is usually much higher, so confirm the figure for your structure and finish.
How long does it take to make custom clothing gift boxes?
Sample making usually takes about 3 working days after the sample fee is received and materials and artwork are confirmed, plus courier time. Mass production is usually 8–15 days after sample approval. Shipping time is additional and depends on whether you choose express, air or sea.
