Wallet Gift Box Guide: Size, Insert & Sample Checks

21. 10 月, 2026

By Esion Package Editorial Team Technical review: Esion Packaging Engineering Team Last updated: October 20, 2026

A wallet gift box is a rigid paper box sized around a leather or fabric wallet, with an insert that holds the wallet in position and a surface that carries the brand. This guide covers cardholders, bifold wallets and long wallets. It does not cover gift-card wallets or packaging for hardware crypto wallets.

At Dongguan Esion Packaging Co., Ltd., we work with wallet and small-leather-goods brands on rigid box projects. The problems we see most often are not about design. The wallet does not sit properly in the insert, the dark leather marks a light lining, or the approved sample and the bulk order do not match.

This guide follows the order we use in a project: measure the wallet, choose the structure, build the insert, protect the leather, confirm the branding, check the sample and prepare the order.

How Do You Measure a Wallet for a Gift Box?

Measure the wallet in the condition it will be packed, not as it appears in a product photo. Length, width and thickness all change with how the wallet is folded, filled and wrapped.

Start with the wallet type, because each type creates a different fit risk.

Wallet type Measure in packed condition Common fit risk
Cardholder Length, width, thickness with cards if they ship inside Box depth too tall, so the wallet slides around
Bifold Folded length, width and folded thickness Raised stitching along the edge reduces clearance
Long or zip-around Length, width, thickness at the zipper or clasp Zipper pull or clasp catches on the insert
Wallet set (wallet plus belt, keyring or card) Each item and its position Total layout needs more internal area than one wallet

Which measurements does the supplier need?

Send the length, width and thickness of the packed wallet, plus the height of any clasp, zipper or raised stitching. Say clearly whether the dimensions are for the internal usable space or the external box size. For fit testing, the internal space is the number that matters.

As an illustration only, a bifold wallet measuring 110 × 95 × 20 mm when folded should not simply become a 110 × 95 × 20 mm cavity. The insert, the lining and the space needed to lift the wallet out all take room. The right clearance depends on the board, wrapping material and insert, so we confirm it on a physical sample rather than applying one standard value.

Should the box include a dust bag, brand card or gift note?

Yes, if they will be in the box. A dust bag, care card or gift note takes up space and changes how the wallet sits. Add them to the first set of dimensions, because adding them after approval usually means changing the insert.

Which Box Structure Suits a Wallet?

For wallets, the structure decision is about how the box opens and how the wallet is removed. Most wallet projects use one of five rigid structures. Each has its own guide, so we only summarize the wallet-specific point here.

  • Two-piece rigid setup box: the lid lifts off the base. It suits a clean, simple presentation, and lid fit matters most on shallow boxes. See our two-piece rigid setup box guide.
  • Magnetic gift box: a magnetic closure holds the lid or flap. It gives a firm close and a premium opening feel. See our magnetic gift box guide or browse the Magnetic Gift Boxes collection.
  • Hinged gift box: the lid stays attached and opens along a hinge, so the wallet is visible as soon as the box opens. See our hinged gift box guide.
  • Drawer box: an inner drawer slides out of a sleeve, which reveals the wallet gradually. See our drawer box packaging guide.
  • Collapsible rigid box: a rigid box that folds flat for storage and shipping, then is assembled by the packer. It suits larger quantities where storage volume matters. See our collapsible rigid box guide.

A lighter folding carton is a different product from a collapsible rigid box. It uses thinner paperboard and gives a less substantial feel, so we treat it as a separate option and not as a rigid box that happens to fold.

If you want to see the range first, the Rigid Gift Boxes collection shows the structures we produce.

How Should the Insert Hold the Wallet?

The insert should position the wallet without pressing on its edges, stitching or surface. Its job is to stop movement, not to grip the wallet.

Wallets are different from hard products because the material is soft and can mark. Check these points when you design the insert:

  • Leave clearance around raised stitching, clasps and zipper pulls.
  • Keep rough contact points away from the leather surface.
  • Include a way to lift the wallet out, such as a finger recess or a ribbon pull, especially on slim boxes.
  • Choose an insert surface that suits the wallet material. Soft leather and delicate finishes need gentler contact than a coated or synthetic wallet.

For a comparison of insert materials, see our jewelry box insert guide. The material options (such as EVA, sponge, corrugated paper and special paper) are the same, but wallets need the clearance and surface checks above.

How Do You Protect Leather Inside a Wallet Gift Box?

Leather needs checks that other products do not. These are things to test on a sample with the real wallet, not claims about the box.

  • Color transfer: a dark leather wallet in a light lining or tissue paper can leave marks over time. Test the actual wallet against the actual lining.
  • Odor: adhesives and new paper can leave a smell. Open the sample after the wallet has been inside for a while and check.
  • Moisture and storage: leather reacts to damp. If the boxes will be stored for some time, tell the supplier so the material and packing can be planned.
  • Pressure marks: check the wallet for dents or marks after it has been in the insert and the box has been closed.

Which Printing and Finishing Suit a Wallet Brand?

One clear logo and one well-chosen finish usually work better than a crowded design. Confirm the artwork file, logo position, color requirements and whether the design continues inside the box.

A dark box with a small foil logo is a common choice for leather brands, and a simple printed logo suits a more price-sensitive range. Foil, embossing and debossing change how the surface looks and feels, so confirm the choice on a physical sample, not only a screen preview. For finishing options in more detail, see our drawer box customization guide, which covers materials, printing and finishes in depth.

To keep bulk orders consistent, record the logo position, colors, finish, dimensions and insert layout in writing, and keep a signed-off sample as the reference.

Is the Box for Retail, Gifting or E-commerce?

Decide the main use first, because it changes what the box has to do.

  • Retail: presentation and opening experience matter most. A rigid box with a fitted insert suits premium shelf display.
  • Gifting and corporate gifts: consistent branding across a large quantity matters most.
  • E-commerce: the box is the product packaging, and an outer shipping carton usually protects it in transit. Plan the carton as a separate item.

What Should You Check on a Wallet Gift Box Sample?

Test the sample with the real wallet, or a wallet with matching dimensions. Check that the wallet fits without pressure, stays in position and comes out comfortably. Then review the lid or closure, corners, surface finish, logo placement, color consistency and glue marks.

Checklist:

  • Wallet dimensions and fit approved with the real product
  • Box structure and materials confirmed
  • Insert layout and clearance checked, including stitching and clasp
  • Leather checks done: color transfer, odor and pressure marks
  • Logo artwork, colors and finishing approved
  • Sample reviewed and accepted in writing
  • Order quantity, production schedule and delivery requirements confirmed

Sampling and mass production are separate stages. Allow time to review the sample, request changes and approve the final specification before the production schedule is confirmed. For the full process, see our sample-to-mass-production guide.

What Are the MOQ and Lead Time for Wallet Gift Boxes?

Production reference, as of October 2026:

Item Reference
MOQ 1,000 pcs for standard custom projects
Mass production About 15 days after the sample and specification are approved
Sample timing Confirmed according to the structure, insert and finish

These are planning references and not a fixed promise. Structure, materials, finishing, quantity and the production schedule can change the final timing, so confirm them for your project.

FAQ

What is the best gift box for a wallet?

A rigid gift box with a fitted insert suits premium wallets, because it holds the wallet in place and gives a substantial feel. A collapsible rigid box can be a better choice when storage and shipping volume matter. The right option depends on the wallet type, budget and use.

What size should a wallet gift box be?

The internal space should hold the wallet in its packed condition, including thickness, clasp or zipper height and any included items such as a dust bag or card. Confirm the size with the real wallet and test the insert on a sample before mass production.

Can wallet gift boxes be customized with a brand logo?

Yes. Customization can include a printed logo, brand colors, foil stamping, embossing or debossing. The options depend on the structure, materials and production requirements.

What is the MOQ for custom wallet gift boxes?

As of October 2026, our general MOQ for standard custom projects is 1,000 pcs. Confirm the MOQ for your specific structure and finish.

How long does it take to produce wallet gift boxes?

Mass production takes about 15 days after the sample and specification are approved. Sample timing depends on the structure, insert and finish, so confirm it with the project details before you set a launch date.

A wallet gift box works best when it starts from accurate measurements of the packed wallet. Once the structure, insert, leather checks and branding are confirmed on a sample, quotations are easier to compare and bulk orders are easier to keep consistent.
