Custom Caviar Gift Box: Tin Fit, Cold-Chain Design & Sample Checks

A custom caviar gift box is a rigid outer gift box with a fitted insert that holds sealed caviar tins or jars in position, presents them as a set, and survives chilled handling and shipping. Dongguan Esion Packaging Co., Ltd. makes custom rigid boxes and inserts for gift sets, and this guide covers what is specific to caviar: tin fit, cold-chain effects, structure choice, insert design, and sample checks.

The gift box is outer packaging. It does not replace the tin or jar that holds the product, and this guide does not cover caviar grading or product food safety. Typical flow: measure the tins, plan for chilled handling, choose a structure, design the insert, then approve a physical sample.

1. What Should You Measure Before Designing a Caviar Gift Box?

Start from the actual tins or jars, not from a box you like the look of. Measure every container in the set separately, and record the following.

What to record Why it matters
Diameter at the widest point, including any rim Sets cavity size and spacing between tins
Height including the lid Sets cavity depth and the space left under the box lid
Filled weight Decides how firmly the insert must support the container, especially for glass jars
Lid and label details A raised or wrapped label changes the fit, and the label must stay readable
Accessories (spoon, card, leaflet) Each needs its own slot or space in the layout
Number of containers and their sizes Decides the layout and the finished box size

Do not size the box by adding the container measurements together. Insert wall thickness, spacing between cavities, finger access and the box construction all take space.

Illustrative example only: a two-tin set with tins measured at 75 mm diameter and 28 mm height would need cavities slightly larger than those figures, spaced so a finger can lift each tin. The exact clearance is confirmed on a sample, because it depends on the insert material and tolerances.

Set layout Layout notes
One tin Compact box, one tailored cavity, room for a spoon or card if included
Two tins Side by side or stacked layers, check lid clearance with both lids on
Three-tin tasting set Different cavity sizes if tins differ, decide which tin is the visual lead
Set with accessories Allocate a separate slot so the accessory does not press on a tin lid

2. How Do Cold Chain and Condensation Affect a Caviar Gift Box?

Caviar is stored and shipped chilled. A packed gift box can move between cold storage, vehicles and room temperature, and a cold tin that meets warmer, humid air can collect condensation on its surface and on the packaging around it.

This is the main difference between a caviar gift box and a dry-goods gift box, and it can affect several parts of the build:

  • Wrapping paper and print: moisture and rubbing at edges may mark dark wraps, foil and soft-touch surfaces.
  • Insert material: open-cell sponge can take up water, while closed-cell materials such as EVA generally resist moisture better. Confirm the grade with your supplier.
  • Glue and board: repeated wet and dry cycles can test the corners and the wrap of a rigid box.
  • Magnet and lid area: check the closure after a chilled test, not only on a dry bench.

A gift box is not an insulated shipper. Cold packs, insulation and temperature control belong to the outer shipping solution, and any cold pack placed near the gift box should be included in the sample test. Decide early with your caviar supplier whether the tins are packed into the box before or after chilling, because that sets the test you need.

3. Which Structure Works for a Caviar Gift Box?

Several rigid structures can hold a caviar set. Hinged describes how the lid is connected, while magnetic describes how it closes, so one box can be both. This section only covers the caviar-specific points; the structure guides explain the construction.

Structure Suits a caviar set when Caviar-specific check Guide
Magnetic closure The recipient opens a clean, premium front panel Closure after chilled handling, lid clearance over tin lids Magnetic closure gift box guide
Hinged lid You want the set displayed with the lid held open Insert height against the hinge and lid swing Hinged gift box guide
Two-piece rigid setup A classic lift-off presentation Lid depth over tall tins, ease of lifting the lid when packed Two-piece rigid setup box guide
Collapsible rigid Boxes ship flat to your packing site before filling Whether the folded box supports the filled weight Collapsible rigid box guide

4. How Should the Insert Hold Caviar Tins?

The insert is where most fit problems appear. For caviar, design it around four points:

  1. Cavity depth: the tin should sit level, with the lid below the rim of the insert and enough space left for the box lid to close without touching it.
  2. Finger access: a customer should lift a chilled tin out without force and without scraping the cavity wall.
  3. Weight support: a filled glass jar needs firmer support than a light tin.
  4. Moisture behavior: choose the material with the cold chain in mind (see section 2).
Sample check What good looks like
Tin movement No rattling when the closed box is gently tilted
Removal Tin lifts out in one motion without damaging the insert
Lid closure Lid closes without pressing on tin lids or accessories
After chilling Insert and cavities keep their shape and surface

5. Which Finishes Suit a Caviar Gift Box?

Logo methods, artwork files and placement are covered in our custom boxes with logo guide. For caviar, three points are worth adding:

  • Dark wraps and soft-touch surfaces can show fingerprints and rubbing, so check them on a handled and chilled sample.
  • Keep fine foil lines and small logos away from lid edges and corners where the box is gripped.
  • Pairing the set with a bottle? See the wine gift box guide for bottle fit and structure.

6. What Labeling and Compliance Points Should You Confirm?

These are points to confirm with your caviar supplier, customs broker or compliance advisor, not packaging advice from us.

  • CITES labels: sturgeon caviar moving across borders is generally covered by CITES rules, with labelling applied to the primary container. Leave the label visible and unobstructed, and confirm requirements for your route.
  • Product labelling on the box: if you print product claims or ingredient information on the outer box, the brand is responsible for meeting the rules of the destination market.
  • EU sales: if you sell in the EU, check your obligations under the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, Regulation (EU) 2025/40, which applies from August 12, 2026.

7. How Should You Check a Caviar Gift Box Sample?

Test the sample with real containers and accessories, and include the chilled step. For the full path from sample to mass production, see our custom packaging sample process guide.

  • Fit the real tins and accessories, and confirm they sit level.
  • Open and close the box several times, including after the chilled test.
  • Lift each tin out and put it back.
  • Chill the packed sample the way your real workflow does, then bring it back to room temperature and inspect the wrap, print, insert and corners.
  • Check logo placement, color and finish under normal lighting.
  • Review the outer shipping carton and cold packs together with the gift box.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Can a caviar gift box keep the product cold?

No. A rigid gift box is presentation packaging, not a thermal container. Cold packs and insulation belong to the outer shipping solution, and any cold pack used near the box should be included in the sample test.

2. Should the insert be designed differently for tins and glass jars?

Yes. Glass jars are usually heavier and need firmer support and careful cavity depth, so measure the actual jar and test the packed sample.

3. Which insert material works best for chilled caviar sets?

Closed-cell materials such as EVA generally resist moisture better than open-cell sponge. The best choice depends on weight, cavity shape and your handling process, so confirm it on a chilled sample.

4. Do I need to leave room for CITES labels?

Labelling rules apply to the primary container, so the box should not hide or press on the label. Confirm the requirements for your route with your caviar supplier or customs broker.

5. What do I need to send for a quote?

Container dimensions and weight, number per set, accessories, preferred structure, artwork, quantity, destination, and whether you need a chilled sample test.
