A custom olive oil gift box is a rigid or paperboard outer box with a fitted insert, built around the exact bottle or tin it holds. This guide covers the outer box, the insert and sample testing for olive oil gift sets. It does not cover the oil itself, bottle selection or food labeling rules.

Here is the order we recommend: bottle specifications, box structure, insert, light and leak considerations, sample approval, then production timing.

1. What Bottle Information Do You Need First?

Olive oil comes in many bottle shapes, and the printed volume says little about fit. Two 500 ml bottles can differ in height, shoulder width and cap size, so each needs its own measurements.

Measure Why it matters
Total height including cap or pourer Sets internal height and lid clearance
Maximum body diameter or width Sets compartment size
Shoulder and neck shape Decides where the insert can support the bottle
Base shape (round, square, with punt) Affects bottom support
Filled weight Decides board thickness and insert type
Closure type (screw cap, pourer, cork) Affects clearance and whether the cap is pressed

Olive oil has a density of roughly 0.91–0.92 g/ml, so 500 ml of oil weighs about 460 g before the glass. Empty bottle weight varies a lot between suppliers, so weigh a filled bottle rather than estimating.

If your oil is sold in tins, the same logic applies. Send the physical tin, because seams, rims and handles change how the insert has to be cut.

2. Which Gift Box Structure Fits Olive Oil Sets?

Pick the structure from the bottle count, the selling price and how the box will travel.

Set type Typical structure Main design point
Single premium bottle Rigid box with lid, or magnetic closure box Lid clearance above cap or neck
Two-bottle set Two-piece or magnetic rigid box Separate compartments so bottles do not touch
Three or more items (oil plus vinegar, tasting minis, accessories) Rigid box with a multi-compartment insert Total weight and how the customer lifts the box

Rigid structures give a firmer base for a heavy glass bottle. For closure details, see our magnetic closure gift box guide. For a lid-and-base structure that suits two-bottle sets, read our two-piece rigid setup box guide. If you are still comparing structures, our custom setup boxes buyer’s guide gives the wider overview, and the luxury rigid boxes article covers premium positioning. You can also browse our rigid gift boxes collection.

A premium gift box protects the bottle inside it, but it is not a complete shipping package. For parcel delivery, plan a separate outer shipping carton and test it with the filled gift box inside.

3. How Should the Insert Hold an Olive Oil Bottle?

The insert decides whether the bottle stays put. Design it from the real bottle, not from a template.

Insert material Strengths Limits to check
EVA foam Close-fitting cavities, cushioning Check the look and feel against your brand and sustainability claims
Paperboard Separate compartments, paper-based appearance, easy to customize Less cushioning for heavy bottles
Molded pulp Shaped support, fiber-based Surface looks rougher; needs tooling for the shape

There is no universally best material. Choose by bottle weight, shape, budget and how the box will be shipped. Our foam inserts guide compares EVA and sponge in more detail.

For a two-bottle set, the divider must stop the bottles touching during normal handling. If the two bottles have different shoulder widths or cap heights, design each cavity separately. The 2 bottle wine box guide shows how layout and dividers work for two glass bottles, and our wine gift box guide covers neck support and lid clearance for glass bottles.

4. What About Light, Leaks and Food Contact?

Light. Light exposure is a known quality factor for olive oil, which is why many producers use dark glass or tins. An opaque gift box adds shading while the bottle is stored inside it, but it does not replace a suitable bottle or closure.

Leaks. The gift box is not designed to contain oil. If a cap or pourer fails, oil can stain the paper wrap and the insert. Confirm the closure is secure, and ask us at the quotation stage whether a bottle wrap or sealed bag is needed for your shipping route.

Food contact. In most gift sets the bottle is sealed, so the outer box does not touch the oil. If any inner component could touch the food directly, confirm the material and supply scope with us before quoting. FSC certification relates to wood-fiber sourcing and is not a food-contact approval.

EU sales. For packaging placed on the EU market, Regulation (EU) 2025/40 (PPWR) applies from August 12, 2026. Check the current requirements for your product and market.

5. Printing and Finishing: What to Prepare

Keep this part simple. Send vector logo files and color references, and approve a printed sample if color consistency matters. For artwork files, logo placement and print method by logo type, see our custom boxes with logo guide.

6. How Should You Test a Sample?

Test with the actual filled bottles, not empty ones.

  1. Place each bottle in the insert and close the box.
  2. Check that the lid does not press on the cap, pourer or neck.
  3. Gently tilt and shake the closed box to check bottles do not move or touch.
  4. Remove and replace the bottles several times; it should not take force.
  5. Weigh the finished box and check the handle or lifting point if it has one.
  6. Confirm printed colors and finishes match the approved design.

If the box will ship directly to customers, test the gift box inside its outer shipping carton. For how a sample moves into bulk production, see our custom packaging sample process guide.

7. Planning for Holiday Orders

Plan backwards from the date the boxes must reach your warehouse, and include sampling, your own approval time, production and shipping.

Step Typical time (as of Nov 2026)
Send bottle specifications and artwork Your side
Sample preparation About 3 working days
Your review and approval Your side
Bulk production About 15 days after approval
Shipping to you Confirm with your freight forwarder

For Christmas 2026, sea freight may no longer fit the calendar for new projects, so confirm shipping mode early. For Lunar New Year 2027 (February 6), factories close around the holiday, so confirm the production schedule before you order. More complex projects take longer.

8. Production Reference and What to Send for a Quote

Production reference, as of November 2026

Item Reference
Standard MOQ 1,000 pieces, depending on final structure and specification
Sample preparation About 3 working days
Bulk production About 15 days after specifications and approvals are confirmed

Frequently Asked Questions About Custom Olive Oil Gift Boxes

1. What box style works best for a single olive oil bottle?

A rigid box with a fitted insert suits premium single bottles. A magnetic closure adds a cleaner opening, but lid clearance above the cap or pourer matters more than the closure type.

2. Can one gift box hold two different olive oil bottles?

Yes. Design each compartment from its own bottle’s measurements. Bottles with the same volume often differ in height and shoulder width.

3. Does a gift box block light from the olive oil?

An opaque box shades the bottle while stored inside it, but it does not replace a dark bottle or tin. Treat it as an extra, not the main light protection.

4. Is the gift box enough for shipping glass olive oil bottles?

No. It protects bottles inside the set, but parcel delivery usually needs an outer shipping carton, tested with the filled gift box.

5. What are the MOQ and lead time?

As of November 2026, the standard MOQ is 1,000 pieces, sample preparation is about 3 working days, and bulk production is about 15 days after approval. Final timing depends on the structure and specifications.
